Why Rug Size Matters More Than You Think

The single most common rug mistake we see at Michael’s Rug Studio isn’t style or color — it’s size. A rug that’s too small makes a room feel disconnected and cramped, while the right size ties the whole space together. Here’s how to get it right, room by room.

Living Room

The front legs of your sofa and chairs should sit on the rug — ideally all four legs of each piece if the room allows it. The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends sizing rugs to the furniture grouping rather than the room itself. For most living rooms, that means an 8′ x 10′ or 9′ x 12′ rug. A rug that only fits under a coffee table will always look too small for the room.

Bedroom

Your rug should extend at least 18-24 inches beyond the sides and foot of the bed, so your feet land on rug instead of cold floor when you get up. For a queen or king bed, that usually means a 9′ x 12′ rug, or a pair of runners on either side for a more tailored look.

Dining Room

All four chair legs should stay on the rug even when pulled out from the table. Measure your table, add at least 24 inches on all sides, and size up from there — most dining rugs run 8′ x 10′ or larger.

When in Doubt, Size Up

A rug that’s slightly too large almost always looks better than one that’s too small. If you’re between sizes, go bigger.
