Rug Placement Ideas for Every Room in Your Home

The right rug in the wrong spot can undercut an otherwise great room. Here’s how to place your rug for maximum impact in the rooms that matter most.

Entryway

A runner or small rug just inside the door defines the entry and gives guests a natural place to wipe their feet before stepping onto your main flooring. Keep it a few inches shorter than the width of the entry hall so it doesn’t touch the walls.

Living Room

Center the rug on the room’s main seating arrangement, not on the room itself — those aren’t always the same thing. The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends anchoring furniture groupings rather than sizing to the room’s total square footage. At minimum, the front legs of your sofa and chairs should rest on the rug so the furniture feels grounded rather than floating at the edge.

Bedroom

Placing the rug so it extends from roughly the top third of the bed out past the foot is a classic, balanced look. Alternatively, two smaller rugs on either side of the bed create a tailored, hotel-style feel and are a great option in smaller rooms.

Dining Room

Center the rug under the table with enough extra space that chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out to sit down — usually at least 24 inches of rug beyond the table’s edge on all sides.

Layering Over Carpet

Placing an area rug over wall-to-wall carpet can work beautifully, especially to define a seating or reading area, but stick to low-pile rugs so you don’t end up with an unstable, overly plush stack underfoot.
