From Black Friday through the New Year, your inbox fills with rug “deals.” Some are genuine, but many rugs bought online from a photo end up disappointing: the color is off, the pile is thinner than expected, or the size doesn’t work in the room. Before you click “buy,” here’s why seeing a rug in person is worth the trip.
Photos Can’t Show What Matters Most
True color
Screens, lighting, and editing all change how a rug looks in photos. Hand-dyed wool also has natural color variation that’s hard to capture. In person, you see the real colors and can judge how they’ll look in your room.
Feel and pile
You can’t feel softness, thickness, or density through a screen. In a showroom, you can walk on the rug, run your hand across the pile, and flip it over to check how it’s made.
Construction and quality
Many online rugs described as “handmade” are hand-tufted with a glued backing, which typically wears out much sooner than a hand-knotted rug. Flip a rug over in person and the difference is obvious. Our guide to hand-knotted vs. machine-made rugs explains what to look for.
Size Is Easier to Get Right in Person
Seeing an 8×10 and a 9×12 side by side makes the right choice much clearer. Bring your room measurements and our team will help you confirm the size before you buy. Our rug size guide is a good place to start.
Returns Are a Hassle
Large rugs are heavy and expensive to ship back. Choosing the right rug the first time, in person, saves you the frustration of re-boxing a 70-pound rug during the busiest time of year.
Local Expertise Lasts Beyond the Sale
When you buy from a local rug store, you get advice that continues after the purchase: pad recommendations, care tips, and access to professional cleaning and repair through our sister company, Mussallem Area Rug Specialists. Our family has been in the rug business in Jacksonville since 1897.
